_About
The story of me began in 1975 in West Yorkshire, England, where I was born and raised but I have spent most of my adult life living in London. Am I supposed to make that bit sound more interesting? Moving on now, I can describe myself as being curious about quite a lot of things really including the crude and ridiculous, the painfully mundane and the hugely fantastical.
I appear to be inescapably rooted in science and have quite a pre-occupation with the 'human condition' but don't let that put you off, I'm not writing text books I'm writing real life for real people. I am a medical school graduate, who switched careers very early on but even now medicine heavily informs my work. It can be seen in the language I use and the themes I choose to explore within fiction. It's a visceral and energetic style which I hope is both engaging and entertaining.
I have a tendency to call myself a creative visual thinker. Apologies if this phrase makes anyone cringe. I see things in pictures as scenes as I write. Does this just make me a bog standard daydreamer? Anyway I prefer the term 'creative visual thinker.' Wherever possible I’ll try and re-create a graphic image with words for you but be warned, it may get a little weird and there may be a few surreal out-takes. I’m just a little bit off-centre but we’ll call that my ‘unique authorial voice’ please. Oh dear. How many more of you have I lost by using sciency language and the word 'bog' in one paragraph? Can you forgive the latter at least? I am Northern, after all.
Anyway, in the great tradition of writers, d.d ruby is not my real name but merely a pseudonym which is partly the reason why I choose not to capitalise the name. It is also an attempt to bring the work into the foreground allowing it to speak for itself. So feel free to join me in my imaginative life and make up the rest.
I have worked as a health columnist and freelance journalist writing on a variety of topics from politics to popular culture. Block is my first published novel. Enjoy!
